Nanotechnology is any technology based on the properties that matter develops when it is the size of 1-100 Nanos. One nano is 1 billionth of a meter.

What is so great about nanotechnology?

Matter takes on different properties than it usually has when it gets nano-sized. For example, nanodevices build themselves from the bottom up, individual atom by atom. Without nanotechnology, it is tight for the scientists of today to assemble anything atom by atom- we do have atomic force microscopes which can move individual atoms themselves, but it is prolonged and expensive. Nanotechnology lets us create self-assembling structures, which has the potential to revolutionize how we conceive of assembly lines in the future.

Also, elements take on different properties at the nanomolecular level. Nanotechnology allows us to make use of catalysts which previously could not be used (because they are generally inert). Gold is a perfect example, as it is idle in regular scales, but in nanoscales, it is quite an active catalyst. Using these catalysts, we can also create new kinds of materials through nanotechnology.

How is nanotechnology going to help me?

Nanotechnology will have profound effects on medicine and is already beginning to. Since both human cells and nanodevices self-assemble, the opportunities are limitless. Not only can nanotechnology be used to develop new methods of drug delivery, but it may also be used to alter cells, kill cancer cells, and more. The possibilities are endless.
